After coming home from a long morning at my restaurant of employment, I've begun reflecting on the nature of humanity in Johnson City. Day after day I watch as people treat servers as if they're a lesser species, and I'm really curious as to why this is so. Everyone, if asked, would admit that working for extra money through college is an admirable feat of responsibility, but why is it that the same people come into restaurants, grocery stores, etc. and treat the employees like their personal servants?
Every day that I work, there are people who come in and make me wonder if I'll ever be treated with respect for my choice in career. I wonder if I'll ever be treated with the common decency that should be shown to individuals you've never met. It's no longer a tipping situation; it's a matter of answering me when I'm asking how your day is, or saying anything besides shouting your order at me and complaining at the smallest opportunity. Smiling, or at least not scowling, would be an incredible addition to my day at work and make my life a lot easier.
Just some thoughts that have been weighing on my mind lately.
