ABOUT THE AUTHOR

ETSU students can now learn about the artistry behind the quilt–texture, pattern, history and more.

WHAT IS IT? The Quilt as Art (ARTA 4957; CRN: 14179) is a special topics class that will be offered in the spring of 2009, and taught by Pat Mink, assistant professor in the department of art & design. The course will focus on quilting designs and techniques as a unique form of contemporary expression, from traditional to unconventional digital designs.

WHY SHOULD I SIGN UP? Since the 1970s quilting as an art form has enjoyed a resurgence, even though it is largely ignored by the mainstream art world. The class offers a unique opportunity to learn about a traditional craft that is an important part of our culture.

INSTRUCTOR PAT MINK SAYS: “It is a layered enterprise physically, visually and metaphorically. Its history, traditions, domestic associations and modern applications all serve to create a complex form well-suited to reflecting contemporary culture.
“On a basic level, students will learn technical skills of sewing, piecing, appliqué, 2-D design, pattern and surface design. Students will also gain insight into the history and traditions of quilts, and their potential as an expressive medium.”

WHEN? The class will be offered in the spring of 2009 on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 2:15 till 5:05.

WHAT IS NEEDED? Students do not need any sewing or quilting experience. There is a prerequisite of 2-D Design ( ARTA 1110) or permission from the instructor. For more information e-mail Pat Mink at mink@etsu.edu.
