ABOUT THE AUTHOR

The upcoming election will be 19-year-old Megan Vannoy’s first step into the booth of destiny and she’s pretty excited about it.

“I’m excited that my opinion will count for something,” said Vannoy regarding her chance to vote.

“The first issue I compare in two candidates is pro-life vs. pro-choice. I always support pro-life. “I can’t vote for someone who doesn’t value the sanctity of human life,” Vannoy said regarding Sen. Barack Obama.

Vannoy’s siding with self-proclaimed “maverick” Sen. McCain. According to the Oct. 22 ABC News and Washington Post poll, 73 percent of first-time voters favor Obama over McCain. The poll showed that among veteran voters, Obama was besting McCain with 50 percent of the vote, compared to 47 percent.

Abortion is a big issue to Vannoy and she feels that she and Sen. Obama are not on the same page.

“If Obama is elected into office, he will pick the replacements for the retiring Supreme Court justices,” said Vannoy. “Obama will obviously pick replacements that share his political views and pro-choice justices will significantly outnumber those who are pro-life. Putting Obama in office will forfeit any hope in overturning Roe vs. Wade.”

Vannoy thinks the economy is like the weather and is based on a cycle.

“We do not know that the economy will do better under Obama. The economy did great under Bush for seven years. Voting on an assumption that the economy will thrive under Obama is not wise,” said Vannoy.

Setting abortion and economic issues aside Vannoy claims she is still very much in support of a McCain-Palin ticket.

“McCain is more experienced than Obama. He was in the U.S. Navy for 20 years and has been involved in politics for over 20 years,” said Vannoy.

“Obama is not experienced enough to lead our country. He is the most junior senator,” she said. “People are voting for him because he says ‘change’ and can deliver a pretty speech.”
